A New Twist on Time Travel Stories:
“The field house was gone, as well as the leaf-covered sidewalk leading up to it. Everything he fully expected to see – the fountain, bike paths, lake, and marina – was gone: all vanished as if part of some magician’s grand illusion.”
Time travel is a popular subject in fiction. Typically the protagonist journeys through the ages with some knowledge of history that helps him or her survive. Consider, however, if one travels into the past of an alternate Earth: an Earth with a different history.
Now let’s complicate this scenario even further. Time travel in fiction is usually accomplished using technology to create a temporal doorway. This technology invariably provides the method of return as well. But what happens if no technology is involved; where the time portal only opens at certain, special geological locations, triggered by subtle – and short-lived – gravitational perturbations caused by rare celestial alignments? It’s not so easy to get back anymore, that’s what happens.
The Moon Chasers, by new author Thomas R. Carey, is the first in a series of novels which will explore such a temporal and dimensional predicament. Mr. Carey’s book kicks off the chronicles of Porter Smith and Henry Dundridge: two high school friends who are cast from a speculative near future into an alternate Earth universe, where they find themselves on the Island of Puerto Rico in the early-sixteenth century. Only in this alternate universe, the first Spanish explorers have failed miserably in their conquest of the New World and the Island’s native inhabitants mistakenly conclude that Porter and Henry are evil Spaniards as well.
The boys are accompanied by Henry’s robot, Solaritron, which has an encyclopedic knowledge of science and history. And while the machine initially proves invaluable, the boys soon learn that differences in alternate Earth histories can prove deadly.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Tom Carey is a practicing attorney in Chicago. He grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and has advanced degrees in biology, physics, and law. He currently resides in Evanston, Illinois with his lovely wife, Linda. Mr. Carey draws upon a wealth of historic, archaeological, scientific, and astrological research conducted over several years to create a realistic and exciting backdrop across which memorable heroes, villains, and semi-villains wrangle, making The Moon Chasers a compelling and, at times, humorous romp from the near future to a distant alternate Earth past.
